Ukrainian History

“Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past” (George Orwell, “1984”). On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a large-scale military operation against Ukraine. Today, it is as important as ever to understand Ukrainian historical and ethnic self-awareness. Therefore, this course invites you to get acquainted with the history of Ukraine and its statehood. The course will be given in Russian with slides presented in English.


Topics

  1. Introduction. Prehistory of Ukraine.
  2. Kyivan Rus’ state and its Ukrainian principalities (9th–13th c.).
  3. The Lithuanian-Ruthenian state and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (14th-16 c.).
  4. The Ukrainian Cossack era (15th–18th c.). The Cossack hetman state (1648-1782).
  5. Ukraine in the 19th and early 20th c.
  6. Participation in world wars and the struggle for independence.
  7. Ukraine in the second half of the 20th c. Gaining independence.
  8. Ukraine in the 21st c. Russian-Ukrainian war. Discussion and self-evaluation test.

Having completed the course the students will be able to:

  1. To understand the historical development of the country.
  2. To be aware of the available historiographical material for self-study.
  3. To critically evaluate the different narratives of Ukrainian history, language and culture.
